What does an optometrist do?
Optometrists provide primary vision care for most Americans who wear
glasses or contact lenses.
Your
optometrist
- examines your eyes for vision problems
- examines your eyes to diagnose diseases of the eye
.
- prescribes eyeglasses and contact lenses .
- provides glasses and contacts.
- monitors eye health for contact lens wearers.
- prescribes drugs to treat some eye diseases.
- removes foreign bodies from the eye
- provides pre- and post-operative care for lasik and
cataract surgery
- refers patients for additional medical care if he
diagnoses eye conditions caused by systemic diseases (diabetes, high
blood pressure)
A licensed optometrist has earned a Doctor of Optometry degree from an
accredited optometry school, following a four-year pre-med undergraduate
program. Dr. Salazar has passed both written and clinical state board
examinations and completes required annual continuing education credits
to maintain his license to practice.
